Housing & Environment
- Tropical fish require an aquarium with a heater to maintain stable warm temperatures.
- Minimum size depends on species, but generally start with at least 40L for a small community tank.
- Keep water between 24–27°C, stable and consistent.
- Use a reliable filter to keep the water clean and oxygenated.
- Provide gravel, plants, and ornaments for hiding places and enrichment.
Diet & Feeding
- Tropical fish diets vary by species, but most do well on a mix of:
- High-quality flakes or pellets formulated for tropical fish.
- Frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia.
- Some species also enjoy vegetable matter (blanched peas, spinach, zucchini).
- Feed small amounts 1–2 times daily. Only feed what they can consume within 2 minutes.
- Avoid overfeeding – leftover food leads to poor water quality.
Cleaning
- Perform 20–30% water changes weekly.
- Use a gravel siphon to remove uneaten food and waste.
- Always treat tap water with a water conditioner before adding it to the tank.
- Rinse filter media in tank water (not tap water) to preserve beneficial bacteria.
Enrichment
- Tropical fish enjoy a varied and enriched environment. Provide:
- Live or artificial plants.
- Caves, rocks, or ornaments for hiding.
- Open swimming areas.
- Keep compatible species together – research before mixing.
Health & Wellbeing
- Signs of stress or illness include: faded colours, clamped fins, rapid breathing, white spots, or loss of appetite.
- Maintain stable water parameters: pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate.
- Quarantine new fish before adding them to your main aquarium.
- Avoid sudden temperature changes or overcrowding.
Important Notes
- Tropical fish require a heater and filter at all times.
- Different species may have specific needs – research your chosen fish carefully.
- With proper care, tropical fish can live for several years and provide a colourful, active display.
