Bird Care Sheet

Housing & Environment

  • Provide a spacious cage—large enough for your bird to stretch wings fully and move about.
  • Place perches of different sizes and textures to keep feet healthy.
  • Keep the cage in a well-lit, draft-free area, away from kitchens and fumes.
  • Birds enjoy natural light, but avoid direct hot sun without shade.

Cleaning

  • Line cage with newspaper or bird-safe paper for easy cleaning.
  • Clean your cage weekly with a bird-safe disinfectant.

Diet & Feeding

  • A balanced diet includes:
    • High-quality bird pellets or seed mix (species-appropriate).
    • Fresh vegetables and fruit (avoid avocado, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol).
    • Occasional treats for enrichment.
  • Fresh, clean water must always be available.

Grooming

  • Provide a shallow dish or spray mist for bathing.
  • Wing trims, nail trims, and beak trims can be done by Bird Barn staff.

Exercise & Enrichment

  • Birds need daily out-of-cage time (in a safe space).
  • Offer toys, branches, and puzzles to prevent boredom.
  • Rotate enrichment regularly to keep them stimulated.

Health & Wellbeing

  • Watch for signs of illness: puffed feathers, reduced appetite, unusual droppings, or changes in behavior.
  • Give Bird Barn a call promptly, or if we’re closed, call your local avian vet.
  • Social birds need interaction—spend time daily with your bird.
