Axolotl Care Sheet

Housing & Environment

  • Axolotls are fully aquatic amphibians that require a tank with water only (no land area needed).
  • A minimum 60L tank is suitable for one axolotl, but larger is better.
  • Provide a gentle filter (axolotls dislike strong currents).
  • Keep the water cool, between 14–20°C. Temperatures above 24°C can be dangerous.
  • Use fine sand or keep the bottom bare. Avoid gravel or small stones as axolotls may swallow them, leading to health issues.
  • Provide hiding spots such as caves, PVC pipes, or decorations.

Cleaning

  • Perform regular water changes (about 20–30% weekly).
  • Use a siphon to remove waste from the bottom.
  • Always treat tap water with water conditioner to remove chlorine and chloramines before adding it to the tank.

Diet & Feeding

  • Axolotls are carnivorous. Offer:
    • Axolotl pellets (commercial formulated diets)
    • Live or frozen foods like bloodworms, blackworms, or brine shrimp
    • Small pieces of earthworm
  • Feed young axolotls daily, adults 2–3 times per week.
  • Remove uneaten food promptly to maintain water quality.

Enrichment

  • Axolotls are generally calm and slow-moving. They don’t require toys, but they enjoy:
    • Caves, plants (real or artificial), tunnels, and shaded areas to explore.
    • Keep lighting low; axolotls prefer dim conditions.

Health & Wellbeing

  • Signs of stress or illness include: curled gills, floating constantly, lack of appetite, or fungal growth on the skin/gills.
  • Maintain good water quality with regular testing (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate levels).
  • Avoid handling axolotls unless absolutely necessary – their skin is delicate.

Important Notes

  • Axolotls are long-lived, often reaching 10–15 years with proper care.
  • Do not keep them with fish or other animals that may nip their gills or be swallowed.
  • Axolotls can regrow limbs, but injuries should still be monitored closely.
