Housing & Environment
- Provide a secure indoor enclosure or outdoor pen (weather permitting).
- Ensure plenty of space for walking, exploring, and basking.
- Substrate should be reptile-safe and suitable for digging (e.g., soil, coconut coir, or a tortoise-safe mix).
- Always include a hide area for security.
Heating & Lighting
- Tortoises require both UVB and heat to thrive.
- Use a basking lamp to create a warm basking spot (32–35°C).
- Provide a cooler area (20–24°C) to allow natural thermoregulation.
- UVB lighting is essential for shell and bone health. Replace bulbs every 6–12 months.
Cleaning
- Spot clean daily by removing uneaten food and waste.
- Fully clean the enclosure weekly using reptile-safe disinfectant.
Diet & Feeding
- Feed a varied diet of leafy greens, weeds, and vegetables.
- Avoid high-protein and high-fat foods.
- Always provide access to clean, fresh water in a shallow dish.
- Calcium supplementation is recommended for healthy shell development.
Exercise & Enrichment
- Provide rocks, logs, and safe plants for climbing and exploring.
- Handle gently and avoid dropping or turning upside down.
- Supervised outdoor time (in safe, warm conditions) is beneficial.
Health & Wellbeing
- Regularly check your tortoise’s shell, eyes, and activity levels.
- Ensure proper hydration by offering shallow baths a few times a week.
- A healthy tortoise is active, alert, and has a smooth, firm shell.
